For any NCIS fan, saying goodbye to Leroy Gibbs was not easy. After years of watching Mark Harmon lead the team with his signature stare and quite intensity, it was hard to imagine anyone else stepping into his shoes. So, when Gary Cole joined the show as Alden Parker, there was a mix of curiosity and let’s be honest – some hesitation.

But something about Parker’s entrance felt different, and over time, fans could see why he was the perfect replacement for Gibbs. So, what exactly made his arrival work? And why was he never meant to be a Gibbs 2.0? Let’s take a closer look.

Why was Alden Parker never meant to be another Leroy Gibbs in NCIS?

For longtime NCIS fans, the departure of Mark Harmon‘s Leroy Jethro Gibbs was quite heartbreaking. But when Gary Cole stepped in as Alden Parker, many were left worried as to how the show would handle such a big change. Thankfully, Cole recently shared why he thinks his character got a really strong entrance – and why Parker is nothing like Gibbs.

Gary Cole stepped in when Mark Harmon left NCIS after Season 19.

Viewers will remember that Parker didn’t just appear out of nowhere, but he was gradually introduced as an FBI agent who crossed paths with Gibbs during a case. This made his arrival feel quite natural and not sudden at all. Cole added via Cinema Blend and said:

To come into an environment of a show that’s been on that long and your lead character is exiting… But they handled that well. It wasn’t like Gibbs left and then this new guy shows up, knocks on the door and goes, ‘Hi, I’m the new guy!

He continued:

He was involved with them, but he wasn’t familiar with them. And over time I became more familiar with the team, and I realized that he was nothing like Gibbs.

And according to Cole, as well, this played a huge role in making fans adjust to the new dynamic without feeling like the show was trying to replace Gibbs overnight. Not only this, but both the characters are quite different from one another. Unlike Gibbs, who was often brutal and authoritative, Parker was more of a teammate who only stepped in when necessary.

The actor added that Parker doesn’t constantly assert authority; he’s “just another guy in the room” most of the time. This fresh take on leadership gave NCIS a fresh wave of energy without trying to copy what came before. One fan favorite moment happens soon after the departure of Gibbs when Parker acknowledged the elephant in the room.

He told the team, “I know this is weird. You had someone here for a long time. I feel weird too.” This honest admission made the transition feel quite real and relatable – something that the fans appreciated.

NCIS can easily be one of the biggest and most loved crime procedural shows on television. But according to Mark Harmon, things could have turned out very differently. In a 2024 interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the actor shared that when he first joined the show, he was told NCIS would focus on real-life cases. He said:

When I first joined the show, part of what they sold me on was that this was all going to be based on real cases. But pretty soon, it settles into murder-a-week because that’s television, right?

The actor who played Leroy Gibbs for 19 seasons also shared that it was Gibbs’ name that played a huge role in capturing his attention. So, he dived deeper into the script to know more about the story.

Although NCIS didn’t stick to its original plan, the changes didn’t stop it from becoming a global success. And with new stories like NCIS: ORIGINS, the legacy of the franchise continues to grow.
