Tragedy struck again in the Will Trent season 4 finale.

Just three episodes after GBI Deputy Director Amanda Wagner (Sonja Sohn) was murdered by Adelaide’s (Mallory Jansen) acolytes, Angie’s doctor husband, Seth (Scott Foley), died from injuries sustained during a car crash in the season finale, “Be of Service.” His death couldn’t have come at a more devastating time: he and Angie (Erika Christensen) were on the way to the hospital for the birth of their baby when their car was side-swiped at a red light.

At first, it seemed Angie’s injuries were more substantial. Seth quickly confirmed that their baby was still alive and kept his injured and in-labor wife calm as they finally decided on a name for their unborn daughter — Edie. He then enlisted the help of several Good Samaritans to help him pry open the door on Angie’s side of the car and even went to check on the driver of the other vehicle, who seemingly died in the crash.

At the hospital, Angie was quickly whisked away to the OR, with Seth promising he was right behind her. It was then that the adrenaline appeared to wear off. Seth lifted his shirt and just as it became clear he was bleeding extensively internally, he began coughing up blood before collapsing on the floor.

The show spared viewers from having to see the moment Angie found out her husband was dead, and instead opted for a series of quiet scenes showing Will (Ramón Rodríguez) meeting baby Edie for the first time and then bringing the baby and Angie back home to stay with him, Nico (Cora Lu Tran) and Betty.

As devastating as Seth’s death is, it quickly becomes clear that Angie’s loss is the push Will needs to move forward following Amanda’s death and focus all of his energy on being there for Edie while Angie recovers from her injuries and grieves her own loss. In a moment that is an emotional tribute to everything Amanda taught Will, he makes baby Edie a promise.

“Alright, be of service,” Will says, echoing Amanda’s words to him, as he looks at Angie’s daughter. “Hello… I’m… It’s me, Will. Will Trent. Wilbur, no, Uncle Will is fine. I’m so sorry about your dad. He was a good guy. He was a friend. Your mom loves you very much, she just needs a minute. This isn’t the easiest start for you. I know a little about that, but you have me, an awkward man in a suit at your service.”

He continues, “Here’s the contract. I will be here, slightly terrified. I’m probably going to mess up some, but I will make sure you are okay. I’ll make sure that you feel safe and loved. I’ll be like your Betty, just less demanding. Deal?”
